Sony Wireless Ebook Reader PRS-700
An year ago when amazon announced the new reading device – amazon kindle, it ran out of stock in the first few days. Gearing on to the world of book reading devices, sony comes up with its new Sony Ebook Reader PRS-700 boasting a touchscreen, note taking and highlighting features. Will the second generation book reader device provide a new dimension?
First thing that the PRS 700 hallmarks is the touch screen and obviously the keyboard is gone. This would mean that the reading device is now bigger than six inches. Apart from the increase in length of the screen, the PRS 700 book reader also features note taking and highlighting features. The screen is sensitive to a stylus and students can write into the screen and save their excerpts. Taking advantage of the touchscreen, you can turn pages by swiping your finger in either direction.
Unlike the kindle store, Sony does not seem to have any plans of an online store for its users, however the users can buy from most online stores. Frequent travelers may want to use the new front lit screen. The sony PRS700 reading device is priced at $399, which is quite pricey, considering the fact that the target audience is the student community.
The things that run in my mind when i consider buying this device, or any reader device for that matter
“It is a one application computer, that i need to carry besides my macbook. It has got a black and white screen and it cannot play music nor videos. It goes without saying i cannot code or even use a browser on it. It weighs 10 pounds and I have to pay too much ($400 plus tax) for owning it. Steve Jobs was right when he said people have stopped reading books, i rarely read these days. I do not see myself buying one in the near future. Oh! But i can use a stylus on it. Now i guess its high time, apple launches a tablet mac.“
Whats your two cents?

Even i do not want to buy these gadgets. Why buy something supplementary to a laptop?
There are a few spelling mistakes in the post, correct them.

This is a different cadre of a gadget that can be made use of to download publications and books. That is why the target is the student community. It is not a ebook reader. Here you have to download books, not ebooks.
It is quite different from a computer.

Though i would not buy a supplementary device, this might be of some interest to students who spend $400 a semester on books. This can be cut down substantially.

Ya, its quite different from a computer and that is why i do not want it.

@ joey,
Pretty right unless you are a student and need a dozen books every semester.

I see using this quite differently than my laptop and desktop. I am often reading pdf research documents which are in excess of 100 pages. I hate sitting in front of my computer to do this so I end up printing them out. The eBook reader makes sense to me. I can upload my pdfs and curl up in a chair or in a comfortable position on the couch to do my reading. I wouldn’t think of taking my laptop to the beach so I am often tethered to my laptop or desktop at home when I have reading to do. This looks like the perfect device to get me out of the house. I can see the advantage of pleasure reading on such a device. I like the ability to search keywords, and annotate while reading.

I should agree that it saves a lot of paper and adds to the convenience. It does sound nice to see that curling in the chair.
I did not note the advanced features like the search and annotation. Thanks for bringing it up..
