Google has been toying around google android for quite some time, with the speculations of keeping the hardware floating around for almost an year. While android has been made open source and the app market not doing significantly well like that of the apple appstore, google plans on unveiling a phone on its own. The Droid did take a tough fight with apple, with 250,000 units sold in the first week, but the holiday season was clearly dominated by apple with its revolutionary iphone.

Several sources on the internet have indicated the google nexus one phone and even the google phone nexus one specifications have been floating around on the internet. Obviously the google product ideas team did not manage to keep this a secret until the launch unlike apple and there were even tweets about the pricing. Google is said to have been in partnership with the HTC for the hardware and the google logo is very likely to be sported on the phone along with HTC. Google is also rumored to have talked with T-mobile for the carrier. Carrier exclusivity might be an option, but that might limit the users by a huge margin. In fact, Paul O’Brien tweeted that the nexus one pricing will be very competitive.

No matter how great the iphone is, Google has one distinct advantage of advertisement space – The Google homepage. When chrome was released, Google took the news across the globe with an ad on the homepage and the same is very likely to happen when the droid killer is supposed to be released. There are also some rumors that the Google phone will be launched on a invitation only basis, pretty much like Google wave.

Call it a step back or not, a device with no internet access has loads of problems. For instance, wikipedia is a website, which is being updated everyday, and there are no provisions to update the data. Also, it is misleading if the wikireader has the capabilities to display images from wikipedia pages.

Another Device:

While it may sound simple to buy a ipod touch and use it for multiple purposes, besides accessing wikipedia entries, the offline factor does play a small yet significant role. If you have internet access, buying this device is foolish as the same level as that of kindle. Wikireader may be put to use by young students.

Canon sells consumer digital cameras under two main brands, Ixus and the PowerShot. The Ixus series of cameras are more attractive and for fashion conscious buyers, while the PowerShot range of cameras are targeted  towards people who would not mind sacrificing the looks. However, both these cameras are high on features. But for the Ixus you have to pay a premium for its looks.

Body and Design

The highlight of the A2000IS is the Change in design the Canon has incorporated. At first glance of the new A2000IS, you will not realize that the camera is part of the PowerShot series. The bulgy right hand side that is generally found in the PowerShot cameras that houses the batteries is now flat. Adding to this is a dual coloured body of silverish gray and black. The grip and ergonomics of the camera still remain the same as with all other PowerShot camera still remain the same as with all other PowerShot range of cameras. So far all is good with the physical features and construction of the camera.

Features

Priced at $229.99 (see offer below for discount), this camera comes with the versatile features of the PowerShot range. The A2000IS lacks an optical viewfinder but this is negated by the large 3in LCD it features. Other technical specifications of the camera are 10-megapixel, 6x optical zoom, Image Stabilizer, Auto Focus and so on. Much like other PowerShot range of Cameras, this one too uses 2xAA batteries to power up.

Controls, Buttons and User Interface

The buttons are located as per the Canon tradition and for first time users as well, the A2000IS will not be confusing the control. The system menu is typical Canon, as found in its other cameras. Although some functions are tweaked and trimmed. You can adjust all the common functions like exposure, white balance, image quality setting and more via the menu. The zoom button is in the form of a rotary bezel. At times the bezel appears to be sensitive and at times a little slow moving.

Performance

Equipped with 6x zoom, it does make it a good combination with the 10-megapixel lens though. The Auto-Focus feature and the Image Stabilization of the camera works well. The picture quality is at par with Canon standard, which is good. The pictures had good sharpness and noise was very well handled by the camera. With regards to the performance A2000IS is up to the mark.

Whats Good:

A good looking camera which is high on features and can deliver great pictures with no fuss, and available at quite a competitive price.

Whats Bad:

Absense of Optical viewfinder and manual exposure options.

The LG KC910 (Renoir)

The 107.8 x 55.9 x 14 mm phone with a mere weight of 114g is a very intriguing new gadget to be released by LG. It has a powerful 8MB camera with GPS, WIFI and 3G support and has very good video playback. It plays DivX/Xvid codecs plus many more.

Features

It has extremely good 8mb camera. It has a powerful Xenon flash and is cheaper than the only other 8MB camera mobile out there, the Sony C905. It also has ISO sensitivity included, which determines how much light to let into the lens, and can be set as high as 1600 which enables you to take photos in the dark. The camera has geo-tagging, face, smile and blink detection all included. You can also take panoramic photos with this phone.

If you need a good media related phone, this is the one to go with. It has support for MP3/MPEG4/AAC/DivX/Xvid media files and has a micro SD memory stick slot for tons of space for all your music/videos needs. The Renoir usually ships with a free 8GB micro SD memory stick. Sadly, the Renoir does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack. It has Dolby mobile audio which makes it very enjoyable to listen to music. It has natural bass, sound space for headphones and a high-frequency enhancer.

It has a FM tuner included in the phone, a document view with support for DOC/XLS/PDF files. It has TV-out, voice memo, built-in hands free and T9 included.

It has a 3 inch touch screen with 256K color TFT, 240 x 400 pixels resolution. The touch screen is not the most responsive but is still use-able. It comes with a stylus. The phone has an accelerometer like the iPhone so you can use the screen in landscape as well has portrait.

The onscreen keyboard can be portrait or landscape as well whilst you type your SMS, MMS and emails on your phone.

Connectivity

The phone has Wifi and 3G included. The 3G is has HSDPA and 7.2 Mbps. The Wifi is Wi-Fi 802.11b/g. It also has bluetooth v2.0 and USB 2.0 support as well.

Body

The LG is very well made. It feels good in the hand and looks great as well. It is not the slimmest phone, 14mm thick, but it is worth it with all the features they have packed into it. You can only get it in one colour, black.

Other

The KC910’s battery life is very impressive with up to 264H of standby time and 3 whole hours of talking time. The Renoir has a built in web browser and comes with a few games. You can download extra games as well if the default ones aren’t to your satisfaction. It also has all the other usual apps like a calander, alarm clock and to-do list.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages:

• Has Wifi, GPS and 3G,
• Brilliant Media player,
• Landscape keyboard for SMS and emailing,
• Looks gorgeous

Disadvantages:

• Touch screen is not the most responsive,
• Not as thin as the iPhone,
• No 3.5mm headphone jack.

To summorize, this is a brilliant phone for media, with its mini SD memory stick slot, as well as everyday phone releated things. It has a landscape keyboard which is a big plus and it has a brilliant 8mb camera. It doesn’t have the most responsive keyboard but it is definately still use-able.

More people are swaying towards netbooks, and computer manufacturers visualize the need for lighter notebooks. Macbook Air was introduced as the world’s lightest notebook and the record kept teasing other notebook manufacturers. Its six months since the lightest notebook was released, Samsung X360 is one of the stylish and trendiest notebooks available, in par with the macbook air, at least in looks.

Samsung X360, not only matches Lenovo X300 and MacBook Air, in terms of looks, but also has plenty of meat to turn the heat on these two ultra thin, light portables. Spending $2500 can get you a notebook that is capable of getting you envied by people around you, but is Samsung X360 powerful enough? Read on.

The samsung X360 is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at just 1.4 Ghz, but is boosted by a 3GB memory (expandable uptp 4GB) and a 128GB solid-state hard drive. The solid state device makes the data transfers faster and cuts down on the boot time, but bloats up the price tag. On the graphics processor front, the X360 uses an Intel 4 Series Express chipset, Intel GMX4500 with 128MB shared memory. This, however is sufficient only for day-to-day computing needs and normal gaming, and may not be ideal, if you plan to play any high-end games.

Samsung claims a battery life of 10-hours, but in a test it lasted for only 8-hours.

Like all other slim and light notebooks, Samsung X360 lacks the Optical Drive, and there are no solutions like the remote disc [ Are you kidding? Samsung is not as innovative as Apple!! ]. The 13.3″ screen supports a resolution of 1280×800 and an LED backlight that delivers about 33% extra brightness over other designs. The screen provides great visuals from all angles and under direct sunlight as well.

The keys are well spaced on the keyboard as Samsung uses keys that pop out through holes. The keys are very comfortable to use and provide good tactile feedback. For Security, the X360 also features a fingerprint reader. The sound quality from the built-in speakers is reasonable.

The Archos 5 is the popular edition of the Archos’s impressive PMP (portable media player) collection. It has a nice, bright, responsive 4.8 inch touch screen and comes in a wide range of internal memory ranging from 60GB to an enormous 250GB. It weighs 250g (60GB version) and 300g (120/250GB version) and feels nice and sturdy in the palm of your hand. The OS is quick due to its ARM® Cortex™ superscalar microprocessor. It has a glossy body which does get fingerprints all over it but still adds to the sleekness and sexiness of the device.

Archos 5 Features:

The Archos 5 is jam-packed with tons of features including an Opera powered web browser with full Flash 9 video support and its very own native email application.

The actual media player supports many more codecs than Apple’s very own iPod Touch. It support MPEG-4 (including Xvid/Divx), WMV, WMV HD MP 720p, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 ASP 720p for video and . You can also optionally buy an extra plug-in which allows you to play MJPEG videos, HD videos and ACC music for a $19.99 which is a disappointment. The Archos 5 has a gorgeous 4.8 inch screen, 800×640 pixels and has the ability to show16.7 million different colors. It is bright and has a decent responsive touch screen. It is excellent for viewing videos however is not good in the sunlight.

The battery life is ok with 12 hours of music playback and 4 hours of video. If you set the screen brightness to around medium, you get a couple more hours of battery. The Archos 5 also includes a built in speaker and has a picture viewer which supports JPEG, BMP, PNG, and GIF files. It also has a PDF file viewer included in the device and a kick-stand that folds out of the back of the devices and allows you to view videos hands-free.

Summary

Overall, the Archos 5 is a brilliant device which is well built, has a good OS, tons of memory space and has supports many different codecs. You do however, need to buy a plug-in for $19.99 to enable some of the codecs on the device and you need to register to unlock some of the more useful applications on the device e.g. web browser.
